Pupils enjoy construction tent activities
Mansell Welcomes Young Site-Seers
Mansell threw open the doors of one of its busiest building sites in a bid to attract youngsters into the construction industry.
The company held a special event at the St Peter’s Road house development site in Sandwell, and invited youngsters from local schools and colleges to see what was going on.
Mansell, along with representatives of its suppliers, laid on two special training tents within the site where youngsters could try their hand at plumbing, carpentry, electrical work, bricklaying, tiling or plastering. The youngsters watched experts at their trade before having a go themselves.
The event was organised by a Mansell team, along with demonstrators from Rounds Carpentry, Dodd Group and GD Decorators. Schools represented included the George Salter School, Wodensborough Community College, Harvills Hawthorn Junior School and Moorlands Junior School. Representatives from Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council and Riverside Housing Association also attended.
Mansell is carrying out a multi-million contract for Sandwell MBC, building new homes and refurbishing others throughout the borough.
Mansell Western region managing director Steve Davies said, “It’s very unusual for youngsters to be allowed onto a ‘live’ building site, but we took all the necessary safety precautions and went ahead with it because we understand the importance of getting over the message that fully qualified trades people are vital to the future of the industry. We have to enthuse youngsters and that can’t always be done in an artificial environment.”
