New look for an old mill
The team at Tayside have been busy transforming a major Perthshire landmark into a new tourist attraction.
The refurbishment of Stanley Mills on the banks of the River Tay was a £3.3 million project to convert the Bell Mill and Mid Mill into a visitor and education centre. The former cotton-spinning mills were built in the late 18th century.
They harnessed the power of the River Tay to provide the economic powerhouse of the surrounding area for the next 200 years until commercial operations ended in 1989. The new centres will house various interactive displays and activities to bring to life the history and science behind the watermills.
Area Director Lindsay Cowan was very proud of the role that his team played in the refurbishment. He said: “We are thrilled to be able to hand this truly special piece of Scottish history back to Historic Scotland”.
