History
Robert Mansell, a bricklayer by trade, set up his family business in 1908, and the site of our Head Office in Croydon remains where his original builder’s yard once stood.
The symbol of Mansell’s identity, the Roman Centurion, stems from its founder – the Roman insignia was derived by combining the first two letters of his forename with the first three of his surname; and the recognised craftsmanship and skills of the Romans positively supports the association with Mansell.
In 1997, through the acquisition of Hall & Tawse, Mansell was able to expand nationally, developing further the strong reputation and trading identity which it retained following its sale to Balfour Beatty in 2003.
So our founder could have had little idea of just how large and successful the business would eventually become – today employing over 2,500 people, with annual revenues in excess of £850 million.
